The project includes the implementation of innovative technologies /high-frequency radar systems/to ensure continuous real-time monitoring of the main hydro meteorological parameters ensuring the safety of ships in ports, roadways and approaches to ports, which will allow easier tracking of pollution sources of the sea water area in the approaches to the ports of Varna and Burgas.

The implementation of a Bulgarian high-frequency (HF) radar surveillance network is in line with WMO GEO recommendations and will support the protection of the marine environment and coasts, provide protection of coastal infrastructure, as well as improve knowledge and understanding of marine and coastal processes, will it will support the management of operations at sea in an efficient and safe manner and will complete the functionalities of the marine warning system in the event of an oil spill. The radar system collects and provides data for continuous real-time monitoring of key hydro meteorological parameters ensuring the safety of ships in ports, roadways and approaches to ports. The measurement of surface sea currents and turbulence, combined with AIS, meteorological and video data, integrated to radar stations provide information on the movement of vessels at any time of the day and in all weather conditions, 24/7.

Main Objective: Provide more complete and reliable hydro meteorological information, improving the safety of navigation and the fight against pollution through the possibility of continuous real-time monitoring of key environmental parameters in the ports of Varna and Burgas, roadsteads and approaches to them.

Specific objectives:

  • Implementation of intelligent transport systems and innovative solutions in maritime transport – high-frequency radar systems for continuous real-time monitoring of the main hydro meteorological parameters. This will ensure real-time tracking of key environmental parameters in port waters and reduce potential pollution risks, which will significantly increase the safety and security of transport.
  • Increasing the share of users of the port terminals in Varna and Burgas, which will also reflect on the socio-economic development of the target regions.

The scope of the project includes the implementation of the following activities:

Activity 1: Delivery and installation of high-frequency radar systems

Activity 2: Supervision of the delivery and installation of high-frequency radar systems

Activity 3: Information and communication activities

Activity 4: Technical assistance and project management
