18 Февруари 2025
Representatives of the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) are attending the first General Assembly Meeting of the International Organization of Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA), which is being held from 18 to 21 February 2025, in Singapore. The transformation of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) into an intergovernmental organization marks a new chapter in international maritime cooperation.
As an active participant in the process, BPI Co. has affirmed Bulgaria's commitment to the development of global maritime standards. Our country was among the first 30 states to sign the Convention for the establishment of the organization, highlighting its responsibility for the development of maritime security and safety.
BPI Co.’s significant role in IALA technical committees has contributed to the formation of international standards. The enterprise will continue this mission within the new structure. The intergovernmental status will in no way alter the essence of IALA as a technical and consultative organization, whose main task remains the promotion of safe, economical, and efficient vessel movement to reduce incidents and improve the protection of the marine environment.
Bulgaria is expected to support the adoption of the Organization’s Rules of Procedure and the formation of technical committees, as well as to participate in the election of members to the Organization's Council. These steps will strengthen international partnerships and assist coastal states in their efforts to ensure safe and sustainable maritime navigation.
IALA Secretary-General Francis Zachariah congratulated the representatives of BPI Co. and expressed gratitude for their joint cooperation. The enterprise continues its leading role in the process of standardizing navigation standards, implementing innovations, and developing strategic partnerships. These efforts ensure secure, efficient and modern maritime navigation in the context of contemporary challenges.
