Children of Varna were baptized in the sea on the International Day of the Seafarer

More than 60 kids from Varna were baptized on the occasion of the International Day of the Seafarer on June 25, 2024. The ceremony was held on the iconic sailing boat Kaliakra. The kids experienced an unforgettable sea trip round the water area of Varna port enjoying their new names - 'Mermaid', 'Seahorse', 'Albatross' and 'Petrel'. The young seafarers learned curious facts about the mariner’s profession, and Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) joined the celebrations for another year in a roll and made the little ones even happier with funny gifts.
On land, the official celebration continued in the Radio Varna Art Hall, and during the gala concert the award-winning authors of the Track in Sea contest were announced. People related to the seafaring profession as well as their friends and relatives participated in the contest. Every year the awarded literary works are published on the website of the Bulgarian Seafarers' Trade Union - www.seafarerstu-bg.com. The exhibition is presented at the office of the Bulgarian Seafarers' Trade Union.
The Children's Sea contest was also held within the event, which turned a quarter of century this year. Children from all over the country took part in it - over a thousand drawings and about a hundred literary works. The celebration was held in the Plenary Hall of the Municipality of Varna.
The festive events were organized by the Initiative Committee for the celebration of the International Day of the Seafarer - Municipality of Varna, Bulgarian Seafarers' Trade Union, Bulgarian Shipmasters’ Association, Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company and Stargate Maritime EOOD.
The International Day of the Seafarer has been officially declared a holiday by the International Marine Organization and aims at emphasizing the global significance of the seafaring profession. Every year on June 25, various initiatives are organized worldwide to increase the public awareness of the enormous contribution of seafarers to the world economy.
