BULRIS praised by the EC

10 Май 2022

The river information system BULRIS for the navigation on the Danube, developed by the Bulgarian Port Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) received a high praise. The recognition came from Agnés Monfret, head of the “Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovenia” Department at the GD “Regional and Urban Policy” of the European Commission. Mrs. Monfret visited the building, acting as the hub for controlling the entire ship traffic in the Bulgarian section of the Danube, on 9 May 2022. She attended a demonstration of the functioning of the various systems, supporting the effective and safe navigation on Bulgaria’s internal waterways.

The BULRIS system is a communications network in line with all technical guidelines for the planning, implementation and operational use of River Information Systems (RIS) to ensure effective and safe navigation on inland waterways. BULRIS is an environment where modern electronic navigation can be implemented. The traffic monitoring systems integrated into RIS provide real-time information on both shore-based services and the required shipping safe navigation data.

The river information system covers 100% of the navigation courses in Bulgaria. Operators monitor the traffic along the entire stretch of the river and at any time they know what hazards are there along the waterways and if there are any stretches, critical for the navigation. The project, under which the system was implemented, received recognition in the area of Information and Communication technologies in the “IT Project of the Year – 2013” competition, and in 2019 the building of the RIS Centre Ruse found a place on an EU postcard, as an example of a successfully implemented European project.
