Six years of modern digital navigation on the Danube
10 Септември 2021
For six years now, Bulgarian Port Infrastructure Company (BPI Co.) has been successfully managing vessel traffic in the Bulgarian stretch of the Danube River through the River Information System BULRIS. The modern navigation system, based on cutting-edge technologies, contributes to the safe operation of shipowners and provides the responsible institutions with important information, related to the maintenance of the waterways, the security and safety of navigation the protection of the environment.
The picturesque lights of the River Information Services Centre in Ruse lighted-up officially for the first time on 10 September 2015. Since that time, it has been providing a complete picture of the navigational situation in the Bulgarian stretch of the river. The RIS is connected to a vast pan-European traffic visualization system, thus enabling the observation of the entire waterway and comprehensive planning and logistics.
Since its commissioning, BPI Co. has been continuously upgrading the services, provided by the River Information System. Available to the respective uses are a Single Window along the river any the System for monitoring non-self-propelled vessels in the Bulgarian vessels. BPI Co. maintains the latest versions of the European river standards in information services.
The centre, which is an enormous hub, accepts, stores and transmits information in real time. At any given moment, operators know where each ship is in the Bulgarian territorial waters, what is the crew on-board, what cargo is being transported, what are the weather conditions, what are the hazards in the waterway and are there any stretches, critical for the navigation.
The River Information Services Centre Ruse was implemented by the BPI Co. within the Project “Implementation of River Information System in the Bulgarian stretch of Danube River – BULRIS”, financed under the Operational Program “Transport” 2007 – 2013. In 2019 the attractive building of the BPI Co. was printed on a post stamp of the EU, as an example of a successfully implemented European project.
