The 80th edition of the “Galata - Varna” swimming marathon was held with the support of BPI Co.

The young and talented swimmers Yordan Yanchev from Sandanski and Vasiliki Kadoglu from Varna won the 80th edition of the “Galata – Varna” swimming marathon. They swam the distance between Cape Galata and the second pier on Varna’s beach in 53:37 minutes and 61:13 minutes respectively. The sports competition, which became a symbolic holiday for the city, was held on 2 August 2020 in our sea capital with the support of the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company. The Head of the “Public Relations and Protocol” Department, Mariela Ganchovska, and the Director of the Directorate “Vessel Traffic Services Authority”, Milen Todorov, presented the winners with special prizes on behalf of BPI Co.
220 participants competed with strength, courage and endurance. The distance of the route in a straight line is 4,400 m, but due to the impossibility to swim in open water without delineated corridors, the swimmers actually had to cover nearly 5,000 m to the finish.
The traditional “Galata – Varna” international swimming marathon is held every year on the first Sunday of August. Its organizers are “Cherno More” Swimming Sports Club, Varna Municipality and the Navy of the Republic of Bulgaria. The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the event is the Mayor, Ivan Portnih. The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Krassen Kralev.
The regional governor, Stoyan Pasev, the commander of the Navy, Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov, the legendary swimmer Petar Stoychev and others were among the official guests of the sporting event.
