Is it possible to go back 3500 years in time? Such an avant-garde experiment was carried out with the support of the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Co. in the picturesque bay of Bolata to cape Kaliakra. There a specially trained crew of rowers – students from the National Sport Academy, conducted experimental sailing in real conditions with an “antiquated” ship. The successive stage of the project “Rezos” Marine Experimental Archeology project took place between 27 July 2017 and 8 August 2017.
The remarkable vessel is a replica of the Thracian battle frigate 3500 years ago by which the mythical King Rezos participated in the Trojan War. The unique wooden ship, resurrecting the Bronze age, weighs 6 tons, 16,4 meters long and 3 meters wide, and the canvas area is 42 square meters. It is built entirely of wood – oak and spruce, according to authentic Thracian technology – without nails, rivets and other modern connections.
The project “Rezos“ is an unprecedented cultural experiment worldwide, under the auspices of UNESCO, Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Co. and the National Sport Academy “Vasil Levski”. The initiator and project manager is Atanas Dimitrov, who has set the ambitious task of the sailing ship to repeat the sailing of the Thracian ruler from the 13th century BC described in the Homer’s Iliad.
